A perpetual calendar is a mechanical memory. Where a simple date wheel counts to thirty-one and must be corrected five times a year, the quantième perpétuel carries a programme of the whole Gregorian cycle inside the movement — the short months, the long months, and the twenty-ninth of February that arrives only when the years divide cleanly by four.
The four apertures
Begin at the dial’s cardinal points. The day of the week and the month sit opposite one another, most often at nine and three; the date rides its own hand around a peripheral track, or sits in a window below twelve. The fourth register is the quiet one — a small aperture marking the position in the four-year cycle. When it reads “4” or “bis”, February is about to gain a day, and the movement already knows.
The moon, and why she matters
Most perpetuals carry an astronomical moonphase, and it is not decoration. The disc advances by one tooth each midnight; a well-made train drifts from the true lunar month by a single day only after a hundred and twenty-two years. To a collector, a correctly indicating moon is proof the calendar has been running, and running true.
Setting, and the golden rule
Never adjust a perpetual calendar between the hours of nine in the evening and three in the morning. In that window the movement is engaged in its nightly change-over, and forcing a corrector risks shearing a finger of the programme wheel. If in doubt, wind the watch fully, advance the time past four, and only then touch the correctors — in the order the maison specifies, never against it.
Living with the complication
Kept on a winder, a perpetual calendar asks nothing of its owner for a lifetime. Let it stop, and the ritual of resetting becomes a small annual pleasure: a conversation with a mechanism that has been counting, faithfully, since long before you owned it. That is the quiet luxury of the complication — it remembers so that you need not.
